First of all, and let me get this out of the way so that there is no misunderstanding, there is no ONE technique for training a horse that is correct. You need to learn a variety of techniques if you’re going to be successful at this. You need to learn how to incorporate different schools of thought along with your own personal preferences and skills. This in itself may be the best tip that anybody gives you so you don’t go wasting your time on trying to do something you’re not cut out to do.
Second tip, and a lot of people will disagree with this, but so be it. Create a bond with your horse. There are lots of techniques out there that are pretty cold and calculated. Breeders swear by them. And I’m not saying that they don’t work. But I feel that your best shot at success with training your horse is to use a technique that creates a bond between you and the animal. I’m not saying you have to marry the old gray mare, but be kind to it. You’ll get a lot farther this way.
Finally, and you can take this to the bank, you can’t fool a horse. Did you ever see that episode of MASH where Radar found the horse and Hawkeye told him to just pretend you’re taking him to the bunk house and the horse didn’t buy it? BJ said, “He knows you’re not taking him to the bunk house.” You cannot, no matter how hard you try, fool a horse. You can stand on your head and whistle Dixie. That horse will know you’re up to something. Be straight with your animal and he or she will respond to you.
